William Hill was founded by, er, William Hill in 1934. Birmingham-born Hill would take illicit bets in the 1920s (when betting was illegal) from locals before moving to London and opening a gambling club in 1934, allowing people to bet via credit or post as cash betting was still illegal. William Hill are no strangers to sport sponsorships and indeed were one of the first companies to indulge in sports sponsorship when it was legalised in the 1970s. It has sponsored hundreds of horse races and greyhound races, plus many events in snooker and tennis. Curiously, it has never sponsored a UK football team as a front-of-shirt sponsor, but it did sponsor the Scottish FA Cup from 2011 to 2020, and at the same time became an ‘official supporter’ of the FA Cup and the English football team.
Is William Hill Safe?
Before we go any further we need to address the elephant in the room – William Hill almost had their UKGC gambling licence revoked in early 2023, a move which surely would have seen the company go out of business. Instead, they were told to pay a record £19.2 million fine for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings. The list of failings was so substantial that the UKGC chief executive said “When we launched this investigation the failings we uncovered were so widespread and alarming serious consideration was given to licence suspension. However, because the operator immediately recognised their failings and worked with us to swiftly implement improvements, we instead opted for the largest enforcement payment in our history.” We sincerely hope that William Hill have learnt their lesson.
In terms of customer safety, William Hill does take all the steps necessary to ensure the protection of customer data. All traffic sent to this sports betting site and then transmitted back across the internet is encrypted, using the same kind of encryption tools as used by financial institutions.

So, although William Hill was not able to match the best odds on any team, in each case it was not far off at all.
William Hill used to offer ‘best odds guaranteed’ to all customers for William Hill horse racing and greyhounds betting in the UK, but scrapped if for ‘some customers’ in October 2023 following the trend of other bookies such as Betfair and PaddyPower. This is a real shame and we sincerely hope that William Hill soon has a change of heart.
William Hill Limits
The minimum stake at William Hill is tiny – only thruppence for those sports bettors whose first exposure to sports betting came via betting shops, and three pence for the rest of us. We’ve seen penny bookies, but surely three-pence is tiny enough for most pockets.
