Minimum Deposit vs Minimum Bet Explained

A minimum deposit is not the same as a minimum bet. These two sports betting terms often confuse even seasoned sports bettors, especially as they are both commonly found among the terms and conditions of sports betting offers.

A minimum deposit is the smallest amount of money a sports betting site will accept as a deposit. For example, if a sports betting site has a minimum deposit limit of £10 and you try and deposit £5, then your deposit will not be accepted.

A minimum bet is the smallest amount of money a sports betting site with accept when you are placing a wager. If the site has a minimum bet threshold of £1 and you attempt to set a bet with a stake of 50p, then your bet will be rejected.

There is no link between these two terms. One site may have a high minimum deposit limit but a low minimum bet limit and vice versa.

Best Deposit Methods for Low Stakes

Even if you are making a small deposit then it’s best you use a tried and tested payment method to make it. Below are what we think are the best methods for making minimal deposits.

Debit Cards

You can’t really go wrong with a Visa or MasterCard debit card. Shops are now legally obliged to accept debit card payments for any amount, no matter how low, so you should have no problems using a card for low stakes deposits. They are also very safe to use, although you should always maintain your safety by only ever playing at sites with UKGC licences.

Ewallets are also an easy way of making minimal payments to an online sports book with low deposit limits. PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are the three most popular eWallets in the UK when it comes to sports betting sites but others, such as MuchBetter, ecoPayz and Trustly are available too. Be aware though that some eWallets put minimum transaction value limits on all purchases, so check your eWallet T&Cs to find out their lowest transaction limit.

Paysafecard is an eVoucher scheme as opposed to an eWallet. The smallest value paysafecard you can acquire is £10. This may not be bad news if you want to make a small deposit though as you could use that £10 limit to make two £5 deposits at two different sites.

Bank transfers

Bank transfers are not usually a good method for small deposits. Many sports betting sites put higher deposit limits on bank transfer transactions, because of the high banking fees charged. Even a site accepting low deposits from other payment methods may do this.

Pay by mobile phone bill

There are a number of ‘pay by mobile phone bill’ services available in the UK, the most notable of which is boku. Low deposits are generally not available via boku and other similar services because of the fees involved, even though most sports books will pass on such fees for pay by mobile phone bill deposits back to the customer.

Are there £1 deposit betting sites in the UK?

In an ideal world there would be £1 deposit betting sites for UK sports bettors all over the internet, but the truth is there are none. Betting sites have to pay fees to their payment services providers, so to receive a £1 deposit they’d have to pay such a high percentage in fees it just would not be worth their while. This is why the absolute minimum accepted by UK low deposit betting sites is usually £5. There are no £1 deposit betting sites in the UK at this present moment in time, and there are not likely to be any £1 deposit betting sites available in the UK in the near or far future.

If you do want to bet in very small stakes then you will just have to visit a real-world high street bookies. There you can place bets for very low stakes indeed. Some online bookies with real-world premises (Coral, William Hill, Ladbrokes, BetVictor, Betfred and others) may allow you to make £1 deposits into your account in person.

Will I still get my welcome bonus?

The answer to that question depends upon the terms and conditions associated with the bonus. Say, for an example, a site has a minimum deposit threshold of only £5. It offers a welcome bonus, but to claim your bonus you need to make a minimum deposit of £10. If you make a £5 deposit then you will not get your bonus – it’s as simple as that. You may still be able to make a further £5 deposit to claim your bonus, but that is not a guarantee. Some new customer bonuses are tied to your initial deposit only, so if your first deposit does not meet the minimum deposit threshold you may scupper your chances of receiving a welcome bonus, forever.

£10 does seem to be the minimum threshold for a new customer welcome bonus. Very few bonuses have a minimum deposit threshold that’s any lower.

Low Deposit Betting Tips

If you want to make low deposits at online low deposit betting sites, then you probably want to make low stake wagers too. How do you make money with low stakes? Fortunately our betting experts have put together a few handy tips, especially for you!

  • Accas are your best bet – you are not going to make a lot of money betting normally with low stakes … if that is your aim. The best chance you have of obtaining a rub of the green when betting with low stakes is with accumulators, or ‘accas’ for short. An acca is a series of single bets that you stream together so that the winnings from one become your stake for the next, and so on. Accas can win big if ALL your bets come in … but ALL your bets have to come in for your acca to win. One tip with accas is to place accas at a site that has ‘acca insurance’. This is a special deal where your overall bet is returned as a free bet if you acca fails by a single selection. With acca insurance make sure you check the T&Cs to see if your acca meets the criteria.
  • After accas … system bets – system bets are like accas except that they include bets that are not singles. For example, a ‘yankee’ bet covers eleven bets over four selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and an acca). You can place each bet with a minimum stake to keep your overall stake down to a minimum. The downside with system bets is that they don’t make as much money as accas if all your bets come in. The upside with system bets is that they still win you money even if not all of your selections are winners.
  • Be careful with spread betting – spread betting sites such as Spreadex accept both small deposits and small stakes, however what you end up paying for a wager may be larger than your original stake. For example, say you back Liverpool to thump Nottingham Forest 4-0 and the Forest reds end up winning 0-2. Because your bet has gone so badly wrong you’ll end up owing the spread betting site much more than you thought you would. The flipside of this is that if Liverpool do go goal-happy and win 8-0 you’ll win much more than you were expecting.
  • Vote for the tote – tote betting is a slightly different way of betting as opposed to fixed odds betting or spread betting. With tote betting all bets for an event are pooled and then shared out among the punters who back the winner. The ‘dividend’ you receive back is based on the volume of your stake. This is a great way of getting a slightly better return for low stakes than the alternatives.

Low deposit betting sites with no minimum deposit

If you are looking for low deposit betting sites with no minimum deposit … then happy hunting! We have never come across a fixed odds site with a no minimum deposit threshold and we can’t see that changing any time soon.

We have already briefly explained why sites place a minimum deposit threshold. Every time you make a deposit at a site there are costs involved – processing fees, bandwidth, security checks and others. Sites also have to pay people to maintain their online cashier services. It all adds up and sites are loathe to pass their fees onto their customers (although some do). They simply absorb them instead and add them to the maintenance costs of running an online sports betting business.

Bearing this in mind, say you want to make a £10 deposit at a sports book online. That sounds simply enough – but which of the following do you think the sports book would prefer? You make a single deposit of £10, or fifty deposits of 20p?

Of course, it is much better for the sports betting site to absorb the cost of one single £10 transaction as opposed to fifty 20p transactions. This is why sports betting sites with no minimum deposit do not exist!

The same goes for £1 deposit betting sites in the UK. One £10 transaction is much less costly (for the site) than ten £1 transactions. This is why the absolute minimum deposit limit accepted by most low deposit betting sites is £5, but for most it’s £10.

Bottom Line

Low deposit betting sites are ideal for sports bettors in many ways – it helps them to keep control of their wagering and prevents them from losing sizeable amounts of money. £1 deposit betting sites would be even better but sadly, such sites are never likely to exist.

We hope our guide to betting sites with low minimum deposit thresholds has been illumination, and all the best with your low stakes wagering!
