All of the best golfers on the planet will be competing for major success this week at the 106th PGA Championship from Valhalla Golf Club, which begs the question: Who are the most popular golfers competing in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla in the second major championship of the year?

  • Tiger Woods most searched for golfer in the world ahead of 2024 PGA Championship
  • Rory McIlroy second most popular golfer in terms of global search volume
  • Just two LIV Golf players in the Top 10 most searched for golfers in the world (Jon Rahm & Brooks Koepka)

Join us as we investigate who the most popular players are in the world, ahead of teeing it up at Valhalla for the second major championship of the year – the 106th PGA Championship. We also give you the rundown of how this data has been gathered and what it means.

Please note that all data gathered is through Ahrefs, looking at a worldwide search.

Who Are The Most Searched For Golfers In The World?

The second major championship of the year is just around the corner, with all the best golfers in the world heading to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The 106th edition of the PGA Championship takes place from Thursday May 16th to Sunday 19th, with a whole host of players looking to get their hands on the coveted Wanamaker Trophy come Sunday evening.

The last time a major championship was held at Valhalla was exactly a decade ago. In 2014 it was the PGA Championship held there, which was won by Rory McIlroy. This was also the last time McIlroy actually won a major title, so he will be hopeful of repeating that feat a decade on on the hallowed Valhalla turf once again.

Coincidentally, it is that man, Rory McIlroy, who would be heading into the 106th PGA Championship as the single most searched golfer in the world, if it weren’t for a certain Tiger Woods.

According to Ahrefs search volume data, arguably the greatest golfer of all time and 15-time major champion, Tiger Woods, is the single most searched for golfer ahead of the 106th PGA Championship, based on the average monthly search volume of a keyword over the past 12 months of data. His global search volume of 1.4 million is over 750,000 more than his nearest competitor in Rory McIlroy.

Despite only playing the majors nowadays, it is evident that Tiger Woods is quite clearly still the single biggest name in professional golf by a country mile. For Rory, the Northern Irishman remains one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour, as well as being at the forefront of professional golf as a spokesperson and role model of the PGA Tour.

McIlroy’s popularity both on and off the golf course seemingly translates into a high search volume as well. The four-time major winner has 639,000 average monthly searches of his name – over 180,000 more than his nearest competitor.

Both Woods and McIlroy are miles ahead of the rest of the pack, with two-time major champion and now LIV Golf star Jon Rahm coming in third. ‘Rahmbo’ boasts roughly 459,000 average monthly searches of his name on the internet through various search engines.

Next comes Norwegian golfing superstar and reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland. The Team Europe Ryder Cup hero has a global search volume of 399,000, which is 70,000 more than the next most popular golfer in the world – Brooks Koepka. The five-time major champion aims to defend his Wanamaker Trophy at Valhalla this week, and is the fifth most popular golfer according to global search volume right now.

Just behind Koepka is the most dominant golfer in the world right now – Scottie Scheffler. The current world number one, two-time Masters champion and almost unbeatable Scheffler has an average monthly search volume of 257,000. The comes reigning US Open champion Wyndham Clark with 248,000 global search volume, with Rickie Fowler (241,000), Justin Thomas (206,000) and Jordan Spieth (204,000) making up the rest of the Top 10.

There are the most popular golfers in the world right now ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship, based on search volume metrics courtesy of Ahrefs. It is worth noting that for all of the players on this list, their respective search volume is a total of their full name and surname search volume combined. For example, Rory McIlroy’s search volume for his full name sits at 608,000, with the term ‘McIlroy’ yielding 31,000 average monthly searches. Add those together and you get his total search volume of 639,000. This is the same for every player on the following lists.

Who Are The Top 10 Most Popular Golfers In The World?

Ranking Player Global SV
1. Tiger Woods 1,400,000
2. Rory McIlroy 639,000
3. Jon Rahm 459,000
4. Viktor Hovland 399,000
5. Brooks Koepka 329,000
6. Scottie Scheffler 257,000
7. Wyndham Clark 248,000
8. Rickie Fowler 241,000
9. Justin Thomas 206,000
10. Jordan Spieth 204,000

Note: Numerical figures based on number of searches on average per month

What Is Search Volume (SV)?

In short, search volume, abbreviated to SV, is the amount of times people type in something to the search engines over a period of time. With the more popular searches getting a higher ‘search volume’ overall.

This can be monitored using software such as Ahrefs, that records this sort of data and regularly updates it. Thus, you can gather extensive data and research on how popular a specific search term is.

In this case, the SV ‘Search Volume’ used for this professional golfers list is an estimation of the average monthly number of searches for a keyword over the latest known 12 months of data.

It is worth noting that the search volume number doesn’t automatically update instantly, it can take time. So if a player wins a tournament for example, it might take a few days/weeks for the search volume to update accurately, rather than instantly.

15-Time Major Champion Tiger Woods Most Searched Professional Golfer

Over 750,000 average monthly searches ahead of Rory McIlroy is the great man himself – Tiger Woods. The 48-year-old has been at the centre of professional golf ever since he turned professional back in August of 1996 at the age of just 20. In fact, there was a lot of hype surrounding Woods before he even turned professional. It didn’t take long for Woods to make an impact either, winning his first PGA Tour tournament months after turning professional and winning The Masters in April 1997 by a record-breaking 12 strokes.

As soon as Tiger Woods turned professional, he signed an endorsement deal with Nike. That deal has only just ended almost 28 years later. The American golfing star boasts a global search volume of 1.4 million – over three-quarters-of-a-million more than the next most searched for golfer in the world. This comes as no surprise given the impact Woods has had on the sport of golf over the best part of three decades.

He is tied for the record with Sam Sneyd for the most PGA Tour victories (82), as well as being second only to Jack Nicklaus in terms of major championship victories (15). Tiger has always been popular. He somewhat transcended the sport of golf, dominating the professional scene for the majority of his career. Not to mention his incredible comeback in 2019 when he won The Masters at Augusta against all odds at the age of 43.

It’s fair to say that Tiger Woods remains and will always remain one of the biggest stars in world golf. You can bet your bottom dollar that in 50 years, the world will still talk about Tiger Woods and the impact he had on the sport of golf. So even though he is 48-years-old now and coming to the end of his career, he still remains the second most popular player in terms of search volume in the entire world.

Rory McIlroy Second Most Searched For Pro Golfer Ahead Of 106th PGA Championship

As you can see in the table above, Rory McIlroy is quite comfortably the second most searched for player in the world of professional golf behind Tiger. The four-time major champion and 25-time PGA Tour winner boasts upward of 639,000 average monthly searches on his name through online search engines.

McIlroy has been at the forefront of professional golf for over 15 years now. Having won his first European Tour event back in February 2009 and his first major championship in June 2011, the 34-year-old quickly became one of the most talked about and popular golfers in the world. There was a lot of hype about McIlroy since the day he turned professional, with a huge following being built from the outset. Not only that, but the Americans were quick to support the Northern Irishman when he began to make waves in the United States.

The Holywood man has always had a strong following from his home country of Northern Ireland, but his popularity grew at a rapid rate as he began to win frequently on both the European Tour and PGA Tour. Fast forward to now and McIlroy is even more popular than Tiger Woods, despite not having won a major for a decade now. Coincidentally, it was the PGA Championship that McIlroy won at Valhalla 10 years ago that was his last. Could he do it again this year? You certainly wouldn’t put it past him!

Multiple Major Champions Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler & Brooks Koepka Remain Amongst The Top 10 Most Searched For Golfers In The UK

Although Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are head and shoulders above any other golfer in the world in terms of search volume, there are certainly several other big names who are highly popular in their own right.

Two-time major champion Jon Rahm sits at number three on the list of most searched for golfers in the world per Ahrefs, with world number one Scottie Scheffler sitting in sixth place. Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and 2023 US Open winner Wyndham Clark are more major champions inside the Top 10, as is five-time major winner and LIV Golf star Brooks Koepka.

Viktor Hovland is the most popular non-major winner in the world of golf with an average monthly search of 399,000. Popular and somewhat rejuvenated American golfing phenom Rickie Fowler makes up the remainder of the Top 10 most searched for golfers in the world ahead of the 106th PGA Championship.

Looking at the Top 10 list, just two LIV Golf stars feature. Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka are the only two LIV Golf players who feature amongst the most popular golfers in the world per global SV. The next most searched for LIV Golf players are the likes of Bryson DeChambeau (124,000), Dustin Johnson (81,000), Cameron Smith (145,000) and Phil Mickelson (190,000).

Top 10 Most Searched Professional Golfers In More Detail

Below we look more in-depth at the 10 most popular golfers in the world according to their average monthly UK search volume. This includes a short insight into their career, their career statistics, achievements and a bit more about their life as one of the most searched for and sought after professional golfers in the world.

Tiger Woods – 1,400,000+ SV

  • Age: 48
  • Nationality: Northern Irish
  • Major Wins: 15
  • PGA Tour Wins: 82

Tiger Woods really needs no introduction at all. He is widely regarded as the single greatest golfer to ever pick up a golf club (Jack Nicklaus might have something to say about that though). The American has won an incredible 15 major championships as well as a staggering 82 PGA Tour events over his illustrious and fruitful career.

Woods is now an inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame and is one of the most famous athletes or sports people in history, not just in golf. He has had some controversies off the course as well as struggling with several injuries throughout his career as well. However, that never stopped him from winning golf tournaments and becoming the dominant force in golf that he was for almost two decades.

At 48-years-old Woods is entering the final stages of his career, but still has the appetite for golf and the want to continue to win. Now he just plays in the four majors and still firmly believes he is good enough to win another one before he retires for good. Tiger Woods is a golfing phenomenon to say the least, taking the sport to new heights with his dominance.

Tiger Woods

Rory McIlroy – 639,000+ SV

  • Age: 35
  • Nationality: Northern Irish
  • Major Wins: 4
  • PGA Tour Wins: 26

Rory McIlroy remains the most popular figure in golf alongside Tiger Woods. The Northern Irishman has had a hugely successful career, which includes winning four major championships, 26 PGA Tour events, 17 European Tour events and a handful of other events around the world too.

The Holywood man is currently ranked at number two in the Official World Golf Rankings behind Scottie Scheffler. It has been 10 years since McIlroy won his last major championship, but he has come close on several occasions, continuing to knock on the door year after year.

McIlroy is one of just three players in the history of professional golf to have won four majors by the time he was 25-years-old. Not only that, but the Northern Irishman became the youngest player to reach $10 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour as well. Fast forward to today and McIlroy is also a three time FedEx Cup winner, as well as now being an influential figure representing the PGA Tour off the golf course as well as on it.

Rory McIlroy

Jon Rahm – 459,000+ SV

  • Age: 29
  • Nationality: Spanish
  • Major Wins: 2
  • PGA Tour Wins: 11

Jon Rahm remains one of the best players in the world right now. The Spanish golfing juggernaut has two major championships to his name having won the 2021 US Open and 2023 Masters. He has also won 11 times on the PGA Tour and 10 times on the European Tour since turning pro in 2016.

At one stage, Rahm was world number one for quite some time, as well as becoming the first Spanish golfer to win the coveted US Open back in 2021. Rahm had been a dominant force on the PGA Tour alongside the likes of Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler before making the switch to LIV Golf in December 2023.

Since his move to LIV, Rahm has somewhat struggled with his game. However, he remains one of the best players in the world and will certainly be in contention in various major championships in years to come. It’s fair to say that Rahm is second only to the great Seve Ballasteros as one of the best Spanish golfers of all time. He has likely surpassed the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal, Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jiminez on the list of all time golfing greats from Spain.

Jon Rahm

Viktor Hovland – 399,000+ SV

  • Age: 26
  • Nationality: Norwegian
  • Major Wins: 0
  • PGA Tour Wins: 6

Viktor Hovland is one of the most likeable characters on the PGA Tour today. The 26-year-old became the first Norwegian golfer to ever win on the PGA Tour, as well as being the first Norway native to win on the European Tour as well.

Hovland is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world right now. He won the 2023 FedEx Cup by capturing the PGA Tour finale at the Tour Championship last year, pocketing $18 million for his troubles as well.

As of yet, Hovland hasn’t been able to capture that elusive major championship, but has come close on more than one occasion. He has won six times on the PGA Tour, and winning a major crown is the natural next step for Viktor. He also made his Ryder Cup debut in 2020 for Team Europe, before winning 3.5 points for Europe at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy to help secure the win for his side.

Viktor Hovland

Brooks Koepka – 329,000+ SV

  • Age: 33
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 5
  • PGA Tour Wins: 9
  • LIV Golf Wins: 4

You cannot talk about golfing dominance and the best players of the past 5-10 years without mentioning the name of Brooks Koepka. The American has won 19 times as a professional golfer, including nine times on the PGA Tour, seven times on the European Tour and three times at LIV Golf. Not only that, but Koepka has five major championships under his belt.

Koepka’s first taste of major success came in June 2017, winning the US Open for the very first time. The American then retained his title a year later at Shinnecock Hills, before adding the Wanamaker Trophy to his list of major triumphs months later at the 2018 PGA Championship. That was the first of three wins in the PGA Championship, winning it again in 2019 before regaining the Wanamaker just last year. Notable, the 33-year-old also became the first LIV Golf star to win a major title.

“Brooksy” has also represented Team USA on four occasions at the Ryder Cup, winning twice. He also won the 2017 Presidents Cup with Team USA. Koepka was one of the highest profile moves from the PGA Tour to LIV back in 2022, and has since won three tournaments at LIV Golf as well as the PGA Championship last year of course. Koepka is without a shadow of a doubt one of the best golfers of the past decade.

Brooks Koepka

Scottie Scheffler – 257,000+ SV

  • Age: 27
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 2
  • PGA Tour Wins: 10

Scottie Scheffler is by far and away the best golfer in the world right now. It isn’t even a question. Scheffler dominates the world of golf right now, having also won the first major of 2024 at The Masters in April at Augusta National – his second Green Jacket. The 27-year-old will likely remain as world number one for a long time, regularly winning PGA Tour events with relative ease.

He has been world number one for over 87 weeks collectively, as well as being the first man in history to win The Players back-to-back in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The American only turned professional back in 2019, which makes his dominance since then even more remarkable.

He has won 13 times as a professional, including 10 PGA Tour tournaments. In 2024 alone, Scheffler has won four times in five successive tournaments. The only one he didn’t win in that stretch was the Houston Open. There is no doubt that Scheffler will continue to dominate the world of golf for years to come, and will without any question win plenty more majors and even more regular PGA Tour events.

RBC Heritage Round Three

Wyndham Clark – 248,000+ SV

  • Age: 30
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 1
  • PGA Tour Wins: 3

Wyndham Clark made a name for himself in the world of professional golf just last year, winning his first PGA Tour tournament in May 2023 at the Wells Fargo Championship. Just one month later he was a major champion as he won the tricky US Open by one stroke to Rory McIlroy.

Since then Clark has won another PGA Tour title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, as well as being one of the few shining lights of the defeated Team USA Ryder Cup team.

Wyndham Clark will certainly continue to be a force in world golf for years to come, of that there is no doubt.

123rd U.S. Open Championship Final Round

Rickie Fowler – 241,000+ SV

  • Age: 35
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 0
  • PGA Tour Wins: 6

Rickie Fowler has been one of the most popular golfers in the world for the best part of a decade now. The six-time PGA Tour winner first tasted victory in May 2012, over a decade ago on the PGA Tour at the Wells Fargo, and has been an ever-present at the top of leaderboards ever since.

Fowler did struggle with his form for a few years, but got back into the winners circle on the PGA Tour last season with a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Although he is yet to win a major, you certainly wouldn’t back against the popular American now that he is back to somewhere near his best.

Rickie Fowler

Justin Thomas – 206,000+ SV

  • Age: 31
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 2
  • PGA Tour Wins: 15

Justin Thomas has won a remarkable 15 times on the PGA Tour, including two major championships. Both majors came at the PGA Championship ironically, so it is an event he is clearly capable of winning and one that suits his game.

‘JT’ has also been world number one previously for a long time, and is undoubtedly one of the best golfers in the world when he is at his best. Although he is somewhat struggling and has been for the best part of a year, he is a force to be reckoned with when on song.

He will almost certainly pick up his form in the not so distant future and once again compete with the big guns in majors and all of the other stellar PGA Tour events week in, week out.

Justin Thomas

Jordan Spieth – 204,000+ SV

  • Age: 30
  • Nationality: American
  • Major Wins: 3
  • PGA Tour Wins: 13

Jordan Spieth shot to stardom with his first win on the PGA Tour over a decade ago at the John Deere Classic at the age of just 19. Fast forward to now and Spieth has won 13 times on the PGA Tour and has also notched up three major titles.

Spieth is just one win away from completing the career grand slam, which he would do if he were able to win at Valhalla this week at the 106th PGA Championship. Spieth will almost certainly continue to win multiple tournaments all around the world from now to the end of his career.

Dean & DeLuca Invitational Final Round

Who Are The Most Popular Golfers On The PGA Tour?

Looking purely at the PGA Tour roster, there are hundreds of players with a large fanbase. Of course, the main players and best in the world always attract the biggest crowds and fans, but there are a whole host of golfers who are highly popular. As the overall list of the Top 10 most searched for golfers in the world showed, 80% of them are PGA Tour players with just two LIV Golf players on the list.

Thus, the first eight names on the following list of the Top 25 most popular PGA Tour golfers in terms of search volume will come as no surprise. 15-time major champion Tiger Woods of course leads the way with an average monthly SV globally of 1.4 million, with Rory McIlroy in second, over 750,000 behind the American, with 639,000.

Viktor Hovland is third with 399,000 average monthly searches of his name, whilst Scottie Scheffler (257,000) and Wyndham Clark (248,000) are next in fourth and fifth respectively. Richie Fowler is in sixth with 241,000, whilst two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (206,000) and three-time major champion Jordan Spieth (204,000) in seventh and eighth respectively.

As Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm were the only other two players in the Top 10 most popular professional golfers in terms of average monthly search volume that were LIV Golf stars, the rest of this PGA Tour player SV list won’t be common knowledge. It is in fact reigning Open Championship winner, Brian Harman, who comes in at nine on the most popular golfers on the PGA Tour, per search volume. He boasts 196,000 average monthly searches of his full name online through various search engines.

Former Masters champion and 15-time PGA Tour winner Adam Scott completes the Top 10 with 158,000 average monthly searches of his name. The detailed list below of the Top 25 most searched for golfers, per Ahrefs, is quite fascinating. It is, as you would expect, littered with major champions, household names in golf and a few up-and-coming stars too.

Some notable names in the PGA Tour golfer SV Top 25 include fan favorite Max Homa, 2021 FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantlay, the ever-popular Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele, English golfing star Tommy Fleetwood and major winners such as Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jason Day to name but a few.

Irishman Shane Lowry, Netflix Full Swing stars Tom Kim, Joel Dahmen, Sahith Theegala and Sepp Straka are just some of the other names who feature inside the Top 25 most popular golfers on the PGA Tour based on average monthly search volume over a 12 month period.

It may surprise a few to see the likes of Hideki Matsuyama, Will Zalatoris, Ludvig Aberg and even Keegan Bradley missing out on the Top 25 of this list. Who Are The Most Popular Players At LIV Golf?

As explained in great detail already, only two LIV Golf players feature inside the Top 10 most popular golfers in the world based on search volume through various online search engines. Both Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka are still two of the best players in the world right now despite playing in the Saudi Arabia backed golf league, hence why they feature on the full list. Not to mention the fact that both won a major championship last year.

However, once you dive a little deeper it is evident that on the whole, the popularity of players representing LIV Golf is in fact far lesser than that of regular PGA Tour players. Yes, there are plenty of major winners now at LIV and still some huge names in golfing circles, but the majority of players have become less popular since making the move to Greg Norman’s golf league.

With Jon Rahm (459,000) and Brooks Koepka (329,000) as the two leading lights at LIV Golf in terms of search volume, who follows? Well, there is roughly a 139,000 gap between Koepka in second and Phil Mickelson in third. Mickelson, the six-time major champion, has an average monthly SV of 190,000. This is followed by Aussie golfer and former Claret Jug winner Cameron Smith in fourth with 145,000 and Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion, making up the Top 5 with 124,000 average monthly searches of his name.

Next on the list of the most popular LIV Golf players in terms of search volume is multiple major winner Dustin Johnson. The former Masters champion is the last LIV Golf player to have a search volume of over 50,000. This might surprise people somewhat, given how popular a player ‘Dusty’ is and how successful he has been throughout his professional golf career.

Former European Ryder Cup hero Tyrrell Hatton comes next on the list of the most popular LIV Golf stars. The colourful Englishman has an SV of 48,000, with former Masters champion Patrick Reed next on the list with 40,000 global SV. Joaquin Niemann (33,700) and Adrian Meronk (33,600) make up the remainder of the Top 10 most searched for LIV Golf players.

Compare those numbers to that of the Top 10 most popular players on the PGA Tour. Jordan Spieth is the tenth most popular PGA Tour player based on SV with 204,000 average monthly searches, compared to Adrian Meronk with less than a sixth of that with 33,600. Is this testament to the popularity of both golf tour’s?

Below is a table of the Top 25 most popular LIV Golf players, their search volume ranking and their average monthly search volume according to Ahrefs. This includes former huge names in the world of golf such as two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, Paul Casey, Talor Gooch, Mathew Wolff, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Kevin Na, Harold Varner III and Louis Oosthuizen to name but a few big names.
