When UEFA Euro 2020 kicked off, millions of football fans worldwide tuned in to watch football powerhouses England, Spain, France, Germany, and others clash in the first pan-European championship played in 11 different cities all across the continent.
However, contrary to expectations, the biggest Euro 2020 fans are not from any of these countries. According to data presented by Safe Betting Sites, China has the biggest number of Euro 2020 enthusiasts, with 87% of football fans interested in watching the UEFA Championship.
China has More Euro 2020 Fans than UK, Spain, or Germany
Although Europe is the epicenter of the football world, the Sportfive and Statista survey showed Europeans lag behind China when it comes to watching the second most popular football tournament after the FIFA World Cup.
As the home of Europe’s biggest football league, England ranked only sixth on this list, with 74% of football fans who are very or somewhat interested in watching the Euro 2020. The YouGov survey from earlier this month showed close to half of the British football fans thought that if the UK were to host the entire tournament, only fans from the UK should be allowed to attend the matches.
France, the two-time UEFA European Championship winner, ranked second behind leading China, with 85% of football fans watching the Euro 2020 matches. Italy follows with 82% of fans.
Germany and Spain, who each have won three titles, ranked fourth and fifth, with 81% and 76% of Euro 2020 fans, respectively. However, statistics show that Germany has the highest share of football fans very interested in the UEFA Championship or 53% of them.
The Sportfive and Statista data show American football fans are the least enthusiastic about the tournament, with 68% interested in watching the Euro 2020 matches.
French Football Fans the Most Optimistic About Getting to the Finals
However, the YouGov survey revealed that French football fans was the most optimistic about getting to the finals. Almost 55% of French respondents believed their country would get to the EURO 2020 final match, while another 22% said it would get to the semi-finals.
Italian football fans ranked second with 35% of them who believe their national football representation would play the finals this year. Almost the same share of Italian football fans said they would get to the semi-finals.
England football fans were the most pessimistic, with only 11% of them who believe their national team would play the Euro 2020 finals.
